Brad Young's last game is the reason why players are notionally safe for now. He slid into the fence when fielding, and that was the catalyst for them bringing in not initially the sponges that we're familiar with today. Ryan Stevenson went sliding over the boundary and had a metal stake go through his leg and took him out of the game. It brought back memories of how close it can be for players who go athletically diving when those boards are so close to their legs.
