The cold war charged the atmosphere for ardent ideas. People worried that liberal democracies were not stable forms of government, and could be easily tipped over into some kind of totalitarianism. This was an era where people really valued culture - they believed it mattered. The emphasis on freedom led to a boom in experimentation,. then in the arts and ideas i do i do.
