The Idea of Tanistry
The idea of tepistry is linked to this need for world conquest. In practice it was terrible, with fratricide and all sorts of pinog. But there was a logic to it, because it's essentiall, your selecting for the person who has the ability to function in this way,. That maybe is the best guaranteer that they will also go on to conquera outside of the family. So i think that was the logic of tanistry. The successor states are influenced by this original model, ar they're still practising tanistry - either formally or informally. It's a kind of secondary institution associated with this understanding of sovereignty.
