David had invited abner to his home, and then he called him back, and then joab kills him. It's genius because it unites all the people. David publicly mourns the death of abner. He actually even instructs the murderer, joab himself and ebishai, his brother. And that's just such a gift, to be able to mourn for one's enemies. Because it would have been wiser for david to have made that enemy a friend in the first place.
