The American Nuclear Umbrella

The question it never seems to get asked and I think it's one that desperately needs to be asked. What is the nature of these commitments we're giving to our, quote, allies? We talk in these very antiseptic terms, extended deterrents on the nuclear umbrella. To me, an umbrella is something you take out in bad weather and you put over your head to protect you.
