The Importance of Textiles in the Middle Ages
There's an enormous amount of embedded knowledge in food. A lot of people ate stuff they shouldn't have eaten and died to get, you know, your duck collar arms on your plate. And so we have quite a sophisticated textile trade going on there. Lots of sophisticated institutions with contracts and agents who could collect debts or record things. There was widespread literacy, which is unusual. I mean, certainly even those that are used for necessity, that are necessities, you see patterning in the weeds,. You see things that are making them decorative and meaningful.
