There is a lot of continental involvement, or at least continental experience. There was plenty to see in germany through the 16 thirties. Some people felt that charles the first had been right to keep england out of this great sortof conflagration on the continent. But then, as historians like john moral have said, england then had its own wars of religion in the 16 forties. The cromwellian view of the new model army as not being an army made up of foreign strangers also played a role.
