What Happened to Women in Eastern Europe?

When the Soviet Union began, it became the first country in the world to legalize abortion in 1920. It very quickly, because it wanted to radically change the state and the family. Gender norms were changed within a generation. And that legacy of changing gender norms survives even to this day. Among Eastern Europeans you can see much higher rates of women in science and engineering careers.
