Lacquer is like sap from a tree, and it can be very irritating to your hands. So the people who first followed through on that idea must have had itchy hands... But it's amazingly durable. And again, the mouth feels,. particularly if you're going to be taking that either utensil, the chopsticks, or the bowl to your mouth - it just feels so different. It makes the experience of eating different.
