The film is a critique of the binary choice between believing what you believe and being ignorant. It's not as simple as "take the red pill take the blue pill" The idea of the matrix is literally being used against neo to keep him in the matrix. A review that really resonated with me was one that came from the perspective of drama, which also builds on what you just said.
