Joshua gathered all the tribes of israel to shechem and summoned the elders. He told them, "Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the river and in egypt, and serve the lord" The people answered that they would not bow down to other gods. But joshua continued: "If you forsake the lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and consume you after having done you good"
