Is the Omacron Variant a Virus?

In europe, i noticed in belgium yesterday, i think, something like half a million infections. And its extremely serious in europe. How dangerous is that in terms of new variance? And how can we, as a society here, protect ourselves and understand at least where we are along the journey of, as it were, coming to terms with covet?
