The History of the Oococ Plateau in Siberia

In the 90s, Dr. Natalia Polosmak was investigating what are known as ice-filled kurgens. These graves were made in an area of Siberia that sits at the borders of modern day China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Russia. And because there was this kurgen stone capping, if you like, above the particular area of the grave, come the next summer, that particular area underneath those cooling stones would never warm up again enough for that ice to melt. As a result, we have these graves frozen in ice frozen in time for us to be able to investigate and understand the very complex ritual procedures and objects and lifestyles of this particular Pazarek community
