The Importance of Maintaining the Social Hierarchy
The Victorians were completely invested in maintaining the social hierarchy. They did give people more rights, but they gave power away in an extremely controlled manner. So if you see somebody in the dark who's well dressed and looks like your wife or daughter then a large part of you is going to think, I hope she gets off. When we think about women in the dark in the 19th century, working class women in thedark presented a much more frightening prospect of dangerous femininity than the middle classes did.
