What's the Legacy of the Mongol Empire in the Near East?
For the Mamluks, of course, this is tremendous news because their empire is safeguarded. In Western Europe, reactions are rather different as they're concerned about a Mongol invasion through Eastern Europe. But there's all sorts of different answers to that question because the Mongols entirely rewire the greater part of Eurasia. And I think that one of the points that came out so clearly for me is just how effective nomadic societies are in this era. So it's very hard to keep a nomadic invasion out.
