Mining involves crunching numbers with specialized computers that use a lot of electricity to do billions and billions of calculations per second. The difficulty of the mining function has nothing to do with how many transactions are in the network, or how much money is being sent to the network. If fewer people are trying to solve the problem, or less computing is being used, the problem gets easier.
