The Supreme Court Justice, Benjamin Curtis, Resigned Shortly Thereafter
Benjamin curtis was a Massachusetts man, graduate of harvard college and harvard law school. He wrote a long pamphlet in response to both the habeas corpus suspension and the emancipation proclamation. In his view, they both were resting on a presidential theory that could not plausibly be said of the president as commander in chief. But there were people around lincoln who actually wanted him to be a dictator.
