The writer meteo villani had a somewhat despairing attitude towards the abilit of medical professionals to help those in need. He claimed that doctors from every part of the world have no good remedy or effective cure to gain money. Some went visiting and dispensing their remedies, but these only demonstrated through their patients deaths that their art was nonsense and false. If you type the word plague into gugle images, the very first picture that pops up is of a doctor wearing a distinctive beaked plague mask. I think it's always interesting to think about the things that people would have done based on their understanding of what was happening.
