Modern Cathedrals - A Reflection of Democracy
The great name being, of course, m sir gobert scott, who managed to restore an enormous number of cathedrals. But that gets overtaken at the end of the nineteenth century by conservation ideas. People like william morris insist that you mustn't change mediaeval buildings. You must eve them as they are and conserve them carefully. The idea of a cathedral that is completely uniform in its seating is a reflection of the growth of democracy in the twentieth century.
