What Is Sensing?

If we say it can't be sensing because sensing requires awareness, then the question is, how else do we come up to describe that? Because it's clearly not just a thermostat. But there's something in there that's in between. And i'm saying it's sensing analogously understood and some sense with awareness some sense without. Does that make sense? I'm trying to figure out how to explain what we can see.
