The Origins of Opiate Addiction
The most common way to treat opiate addiction at the turn of the 20th century was through controlled doses of heroin. In 1923, US Treasuries Narcotics Division banned all legal narcotic sales in the US. The following year, the Heroin Act made the possession of heroin illegal. There's little evidence suggesting that these groups were directly to blame for the influx of opiates into the American population.
