Sue Wilkinson: I can imagine writing and finishing this work during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially during the height of it. Do you think any of your argumentation or interpretation of this evidence may be changed as a result of living through this similar period of fraught realities around an object? Well, I have to say that there was something very powerful about writing this and seeing ideas, interpretations that I'd come up with about what the gas mask meant in World War II.
