The Different Types of Work in Thoreau's Thinking

Thoreau worked against the backdrop of economic crisis. He encouraged his readers to think about the different varieties of work as different opportunities in life. Thoreau was never a Luddite he was never anti machine work, but he did notice that the mills and the rise of the Industrial Revolution had produced a system of work which tended to alienate both laborers and capitalists who owned factories.
