The History of Angkor Wat
Around the year 900, a Khmer king named Yasovaman decides to move his court to a new site where there is room to build his own monuments. He commissions a steppe pyramid to be built on top of a hill overlooking the plain. Known as Bakhen, the monument is constructed in layers like a wedding cake, with staircases flowing up three levels to a flat top. Rising from here are five towers resembling lotus flowers. Although Bakhen is abandoned after only a few decades of use, its hilltop position is unique. Today tourists often climb up onto the high platform towards the sunset of the five towers of Angkor Wat.
