Dying is more like cooking than something that a chemical lab would do. There's a lot of trial and error. If I add this, what do I get? And then when you start to have sort of more, you can get a long way with just that sort oftrial and error without a deeper understanding. So the history of dying sort of shows both the power of that type of understanding and its limits.
