The Rise of Camping
The rise of camping is part of the late 19th century reaction to the industrial revolution. All modern holidays are searches for pastoral arcadias there's a collective yearning for something that is non-urban and untouched by modern life. The early journals of the camping associations are always decorated with a pot over a fire which is a very sort of Arcadian British yearning for a world that's lost.
