The Evolution of Generations

When did generations become a thing? How do we demarcate generations? Is it a matter of artificial dividing lines within what's fundamentally a continuum or does it make sense to find these distinctive markers that introduce discontinuities in how people think about the world? The word generations used to be used for say, three generations in the same family. It means grandparents, the parents, and the kids. But now the way we use it more often is in terms of social generations.
