I didn't like ever wearing blackjackets and helmets because it was so insulting to people who were suffering at the most appalling horrors. And I suppose it was a training for what you found yourself doing later in your career around the world, which was covering human suffering. An awful lot of journalists are so keen on expounding to the bereaved what they think is the geopolitical solution to something. That's insulting to them as well when you write about it. And you must listen. There is a danger on the road that a kind of sort of divider can set in.
