After the birth of her child, Mary confided that she couldn't see how she could go on if he was still around. She began to consider her options of divorcing him or having the marriage annulled. But neither of those really fitted with her Catholic beliefs because she couldn't divorce in Catholic law. People still question whether she would knew that they planned to murder him. Boffle is the one who helped carry out the deed. He and his servant seemed to have been found in the gardens, but he had not died in the explosion. He had actually been strangled. And so he had been murdered when the first murder attempt didn't work.
