Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House

Shirley Jackson's haunting of Hill House is a fantastically written, beautiful modernization of the Gothic horror tale. Her stories are genuinely creepy and she doesn't even need to resort to the supernatural overtly at all. In terms of just sheer writing skill and characterization, she kicks Lovecraft's ass like big time. The lottery is something she wrote at the beginning of her career, I believe it was shortly after her first book was published.
