Smedley's Arms

In 1923, the newly elected mayor of Philadelphia asked Smedley to leave the Marines to become director of public safety in charge of the city's police and fire departments. He made the ordered raids on more than 900 speakeasies in Philadelphia. It ordered the arrests of corrupt police officers. And cut the roofs off their cars so they couldn't sleep on the job.
