Yuan Shurkai and the May 4 Movement
Yuan Shurkai was advised by his American advisor on all things constitutional, Dr. Frank Goodnow, later of Johns Hopkins University. He signed a document saying this was the price he paid to get secret Japanese support for his future bid to become the new emperor of China. The national and patriotic outrage was so great that the whole matter of this sellout to the Japanese climaxed on May 4, 1919. In the May 4 movement, the Wu-Suyu-Yin-Dong we will focus on as a future podcast episode.
