The Civil War and Country Houses
The big houses got pretty knocked about during the civil war. They were regarded as strongholds, even if they weren't actually castles. Oliver cromwell blew them up so that they couldn't be used for defensive purposes any more. But building went on an er e, slightly a different way. Am there were strong connections with holland. And holland had developed a much more cosier kind of architecture. It was symmetrical and it was well organized.
