Victorians didn't appreciate a suntan at all and it was linked in popular consciousness to the idea of manual labor because people who worked outside in the fields got tan as they were working. coco chanel as a trend setter a fashion leader sort of put the stamp of glamour on sunbathing by the 1930s. The design of the bathing costume is profoundly affected by the fashion for sunbathing.
