He was inspired by the idea that his church had fallen from what he regarded as the path of righteousness. His 95 theses were taken down and set in print, which gave rise to the reformation. But it wasn't Martin Luther's intention to break the church in two. He still thought of himself as a catholic until his death - but didn't want the pope in charge.
