The couple bought guns, hired guards and turned the refuge into a virtual fortress. Ann says John saw a psychiatrist but refused antidepressants. She however, was taking an enormous amount of medication. In 2005, perhaps trying to write the ship, Benders set up a $70 million trust to manage the refuge.
