Caroline's work so far is pretty much about recovering for want of a better story or trying to illuminate the lives of people who you see almost exclusively through the views of other people. For the Aztec Machica people, there are no alphabetic written sources from before the invasion. So everything is from this colonial period and you just have to treat the materials incredibly carefully. It's painstaking work and often will involve sources that traditionally historians did not see as being scholarly enough to include.
