APL 360 - What Larry Had Done With the Mailbox
In APL, when you interrupted something, you had access to all of the access to the execution stack. Larry made changes to the interpreter so that names were locked into the symbol table. He did that by mapping the print names so that the first character of the name was a symbol. The result was that there were zero global variables in the workspace except for the thing called scribe.
