The Trial of Marguerite Farmy

Marguerite Farmy was accused of shooting her husband Allie in 1923. The trial at the old Bailey is packed with high society ladies, teenage shop assistants and even England's first two female barristers. A lot of these women are likely to have read a so-called desert romance novel - novels about supposedly innocent Western women seduced by handsome men of Eastern heritage. As historian Lucy Bland points out, Marguerite and Allie's relationship must have seemed like a real life desert romance,. despite its decidedly unromantic conclusion.
