In this country now, you're really talking as a social psychologist about conservative and liberalist two ways of being human. There are dimensions. openness to experience is the main psychological trait that has been found to correlate with the left-right dimension. So I think that gets a part of the confusion that it's probably the simplest thing to associate conservative with Republican and liberal with Democrat.
