The Golden Age of Journalism in China
In the early 1990s, Deng Xiaoping moved to restart the economic reforms that he'd begun in the 1980s. As the Chinese economy grew, as the boom took shape, it became considerably easier. But since Xi Jinping became the top leader, China has gotten much more repressive internally. And so we're seeing a situation where just a handful of American journalists are very constrained in what they can do in China.
