Two groups of two and one other, there's one that I researched fully, managed to get out of San Jose. By walking during the night and sleeping during the day they made their way over the Loire into Vichy France. Then in the case of George Wheeler, he went to Barcelona and from there was picked up in a British diplomatic car,. He flew home in some style in a flying boat.
