Mary Reed grew up in the slums of London. She started to dress as a boy, or be dressed as a man, when she was about nine years old. And like many people in that situation, she became a pirate. Anne Bonny is supposed to have said to the other pirates down below, if you would fault like men, you would not be hung like dogs.
