The Psychology of Swearing
Stephen Fry has written a book about the way that language is connected to emotion in his book The Seven Words You Can't Say on TV. He says swearing involves different parts of the brain and people who have suffered a stroke can often retain their ability to swear. There are probably a large number of genes each of which improves our linguistic communication via an easy easy bit according to Fry. It suggests that there was some like every the evolution of every other complex organ there was a set of intermediate stages one of which could have been selected for by mutation or combination.
