The Importance of Studying Your Predecessors

I think what's really interesting about comedians and you talk about this with chess grandmasters but chess grandmasters will go about studying their predecessors. And there seems to be a tremendous amount of studying as well in comedy. I'm not necessarily sure it's a direct connection between the very different domains. Many people like to imagine I must invent it out of whole cloth. I must come up with it on my own. But you know, look, there's been a lot of people before us that have done really well.
