Rousseau wrote about a time when he felt he was too well dressed to go into an ordinary neighborhood bakery. There are several things about this quote that need to be unpacked. The famine in 17 89, which supposedly marked her making the statement, never occurred. And if anything, it would make whoever originally said it even more detached from regular people.
