The Crimean War Set the Stage for World War 1

The Crimean War has a long legacy and this is part of it. That Austro-Russian standoff, that's the thing that starts the First World War. The British want things to be fairly stable without allowing aggressive powers like France or Russia to change the balance. There are people in Serbia who are cheering for Russia today. They see that ideological and ethnic and religious connection as more important than anything else. So it polarizes and divides communities across Eastern Europe. Britain is ultimately obliged to back Turkey again in 1878.
