The Evolution of Progressive Enhancement
Responsive design is an evolution of progressive building on what's come before. It feels like things being built, you know, one on top of it in a layered way. You build with the simplest possible technology and then go on to enhance it. If something fails at one of those higher levels, that doesn't work on this particular device, it's okay because the core functionality you've already provided for has met that need.
