The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004
In 2004, President George W. Bush signed a significant federal bill called the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. The law provides that under federal law, any person who causes death or injury to a child in the womb shall be charged with a separate offense. That is precisely the argument Cherish's mother was hoping to win in the case of her pregnant daughter's death as it pertained to Arkansas state law. She won, but only after a hunter's sentence was reduced from death to life without parole.
