The book begins with the end of a british colonial rule in what is now malasia. A massive plantation boom, mostly in southeast asia, but more recently, spreading out to other parts of the world. The environmental concerns come relatively late, the late 19 seventies and o the early 19 eighties. And theyare driven in part by environmental campaigners, groups like greenpeas that are paying attention to the loss of rain forest. But they're also really driven by campaigns for indigenous rights.
